How Much Does a Ground Source Heat Pump Cost?

The ground source heat pump cost will differ from one project to another. The average UK ground source heat pump price and installation can vary.

How do Ground Source Heat Pumps Work?

A ground source heat pump system harnesses natural heat from underground by pumping water through it in pipes. The heat pump then increases the temperature, and the heat is used to provide home heating or hot water.

They need electricity to run, but the idea is that they use less electrical energy than the heat they produce. The pump performs the same role as a boiler in a central heating system but it uses ambient heat from the ground, rather than burning fuel to generate heat.

How Much Does a Ground Source Heat Pump Cost?

Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) are widely known as environmentally-friendly investments that can help you save up £790 – £1425 per year on your heating bill when replacing an old electric system.

A 6-8 kW horizontal ground source heat pump system usually costs around £10,000 to £12,500 to install. A larger 12kW horizontal ground source heat pump system would cost around £15,500 to £17,500 to install.

Should I Buy One?

Ground source heat pumps work best with underfloor heating, which requires lower temperatures than radiators. The heat produced by a ground source heat pump is at a lower temperature than other forms of heating.

Ground source heat pumps are generally better suited to new-build properties than retrofitting to an existing one. This is because costs could be reduced if the heat pump is included as part of the building’s specification, rather than having to fit underfloor heating later on.

The ground loop element should need little maintenance once it’s in place. They usually come with warranties of two or three years, but should operate for 20 years or more.
